• Roger Blaine reported by email Sat, Aug 24, 2013 at 10:42 PM: HOLMES, WRAY TIE IN INDIANA; MORVILLE IS DISTRICT CHAMP, WILMOTH STATE CHAMP  |  Michael Holmes, Louisville, Ky., and Laverne Wray, York, Pa., tied for first in the 2013 Indiana State & District 6 checkers tournament Aug. 23-24 in Shipshewana, Indiana, each with 22 points out of a possible 28. It was a thriller of a tourney even with only 10 in attendance. Laverne led for the first 5 rounds as Michael had been nicked for a couple of draws, but Michael then took their match with a win and a draw. In the climactic Round 7, Bryce Morville pulled a major upset with a win and draw against Michael, leaving Laverne again in the driver's seat, but Jerry Miller beat Laverne in the prolonged final game of the day, earning a split with a surprise shot at the end. Morville, of Dalton City, Illinois, was third and earned the title of District 6 Champion as the top scorer residing in the 4-state region. Greg Wilmoth, Richmond, Ind., took 4th place and became the 2013 State Champion as the top Indiana resident. It was announced at the beginning of the tournament that Dennis Bullington, our State Champion of 2011, had passed away in March of this year. We had not known of his death until Pal Bucker recently talked with his relatives on the phone. Denny, who lived in Salem, Indiana, will be remembered as a kindly friend and respected gentleman of the game. Also the tragic accidental death of Eli Raber's grandson just days before the tournament causes him not to attend. Please note John Drexel only played Friday's 4 rounds withdrawing after the fourth round and Roger Blaine played only Saturday's three rounds as fifth through seventh round to balance the field as even pair rounds. Roger's Sonne-Berger variation was used to separate tied players (how each player performed against each other in case of a tie).  Because of the small number of entries, Classes A and B played together and a partial round robin schedule was used. Pete Schumucker renewed his ACF Membership and donated his $20 back to the prize fund. District 6 includes the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Ohio.
